the switch itself has no real detents it's just a sliding set of contacts, the mechanics in the cup is what positions it, at 'center' the mechanical parts should 'detent' and the lever shouldn't be able to be either side of that to confuse the switch, in the center/off position, there should be no play, if there is something is worn
