I know this isn't any help now, but I usually try and make sure the tranny is in neutral when I pull the shifter. Then there is no guessing to which gear it was in. You should be able to pull the shifter and move the forks till it is in neutral. Then re-install with the shifter pretty much vertical. Hope that helps.
