any parking brake can be used as an "emergency" brake [misnomer], but that's a "misuse", and hopefully never required .... the drive line parking brake on bigger trucks is used the same as any [the rear wheels can't turn if the driveshaft can't move], put it in 1st or R when parking for added safety
