I would check the Jeep idea - Jeep could have used the same tranny as Ford by use of an adapter.
I think swaping the internals could get expensive, if it's even possible, by the time you buy a new case. Why not go to a good machine shop and interest them in making a 1/2" thick adapter. I wouldn't think it would be any more expensive then a new case.
