Carters make some of the very best carburetor for off-road, as Carter did much R & D on the subject.

Changing the intake would be necessary, but a Carter AFB would make an excellent choice.

For a 283:

Carter 9400s or 9410s

For a 327:

Carter 9500s or 9510s (both electric choke)
Carter 4758s (manual choke)

For a 350:

Carter 9625s or 9635s (NOT 9635sa) (both electric choke)
Carter 4759s (manual choke)

Modify the unit you choose by installing the special Carter marine/off-road spring-loaded fuel valves.

All of these carbs were produced PRIOR to 1985. I won't personally use or recommend the newer units.
