Absolutely be careful! Can't say that enough!
As Dave mentioned, if the linkage needs adjustment you may be able to get at it from under the truck. (On the ground, under the truck, not under the raised bed!!) Have someone in the cab move the lever, while you watch from the bottom. You might be able to spot what the problem is.
