I just bought an old Oldsmobile Super 88 has the 4 speed Hydra-matic inside. I dropped the transmission oil pan to clean out the 50 years of Gunk and clean the filter. I noticed the rear band has almost a quarter inch (3/8) of play! Is the band adjustable, and should it have that much freeplay in it? I bought the car without ever test driving it because the fuel pump is out. The previous owner said he had to let it warm up some, before the trans would engage. The transmission oil didnt smell burned but looked like the oil was breaking down back into a dead dinosaur, the filters corners were clogged so I've used an air compressor to blow the clumps out of the filter. Once auto zone finally gets me my new fuel pump I can elaborate more on the trans symptoms. I just want to know if I should be prepared for a trans overhaul, or a possible swap for a newer modern trans, or hopefully just a little adjustment on the bands.

Thank you all for any Help in Advance
