Vapor lock sounds like it. We had the same thing happen with my brother's 1962 Chevy station wagon. I have a new fuel pump on the shelf. I'll replace the old one and see if it fixes things.
As for the timing, my Dad and I set the timing using a light about six months ago... I'll check it also.
