I'm looking to swap the 3-speed tranmission in my '48 1/2 ton for a 4-speed with granny gear. I'm thinking sometimes I might like the granny gear to get my boat up the ramp at low tide. I can get a 4-speed with either yoke. Is there any reason why I should switch from the original closed driveline when making the swap? I figure if I'm in there swapping transmissions then I might want to do some other work that makes sense at that time. Basically I have no clue.
