My 38 has a 160 deg thermostat & runs at about 170 during the summer. If you are running close to 220 while the engine is running you probably need either a thermostat or a boiling out of your radiator. If you are concerned about the reading being high after shutting the engine off that is normal. You still have all of the heat in the engine with no circulation to get it to the radiator. The coolant still in the engine will get quite hot & your gauge will reflect that.
