For what it's worth, the winner of the Special Turing class (stock sedans with less than ~250 cubic inches) in the 1953 Mexican Road Race was a stock 1954 Chevrolet with a Powerglide. This car averaged 77 mph for nearly 2,000 miles with what should have been a 3.55:1 rear end.
