I removed the torque tube from my '61 fairly easy, you need a good sturdy pair of pliers to take the rings off the U-joints. I'm not much help, but if you are going to replace the u joints, just cut em off with a cutoff wheel and the tube will remove without hesitation. They're pretty cheap these days to replace. Hope this helps more than it hinders.
