A '96 what V-8? I probably don't know the complete answer to your question, but I know it starts with knowing what V-8 you're dealing with.

Assuming its a LS type Chevy I believe you can get kits from Jegs and similar vendors to make the swap. You end up changing a lot of parts and while you might simplify the wiring you loose the advantages the advanced engine management brings.
