My 53 1 ton panel--Ruby-- is making me crazy and I really need some advice and a fresh perspective on the problem.
Here is her condition:
1. 261, holley weber 2bbl, HEI.
2. just adjusted the valves
3. HEI is used, new rotor, cap; replaced pick up with one off of a unit that was working when the shaft broke so I think it is ok.
4. Ball on flywheel and pointer line up @ #1 cyl. TDC and that is where I set the timing.
5. 19" vac. @ idle.
THE PROBLEM: I had to replace my old HEI when it wore out and I can't get this new set up to run smooth; the old one did. on acceleration it is like the timing is totally off --sputtering, bogs down, no power until about 40mph when it sort of smooths out if you keep a very light foot. Pops some through the exhaust when I let off the gas. I did check for vac. leaks and fixed one at the carb but realy didn't see much improvement. At idle she holds a steady 19" and the vac. advance seems to work. I don't want to have to put her down. Anybody got any idears? I keep seeing that old Mauldin cartoon from WWII of Willie with his
.45 pointed at his jeep and I just gotta' fix her.
