About fifty years ago the owner of the filling where I was working had been a motor pool mechanic in WW2. He claimed that the Army spread the story that a battery would discharge if sitting on a concrete floor in order to prevent battery acid spills on the concrete. The Army's theory was that the mechanics didn't care if they spilled acid on the concrete, but the mechanics did not want their batteries to discharge.
