One other option would be to replace the trans with a 4 speed from a truck. If that is something you would be interested in I have an sm420 in my '66 right now that I would trade for a car trans, as I am hoping to graft an overdrive onto a four speed and the truck ones don't really work for that. What gear ratios does your trans have?
