The main reason the babbit goes bad is the inertial forces caused by the heavy pistons. I talked with a 39 owner who uses babbeted rods and drives 70 mph regularly with no damage because he put in aluminum pistons. I bought a set of .030 over aluminum pistons that I'm going to use when it's time to rebuild my 38.
