When you say it blew up are you talking about the solder came out of the armature pins? Your typically ok using the 6 volt starter, however, like any starter 6 or 12 it will only take so much. If you cranked on it long enough the starter will heat up to the point of blowing the solder out of the armature pins. When this happens it usually takes the field coils with it.
