| | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 554 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 554 | I have been spray painting various projects for almost 50 years (on a very sporadic basis) using all kinds of equipment. I have not attempted painting the exterior of a car since the infamous "sharkskin" effect I got 44 years ago. I am still very much a novice. I bought a HVLP 3 gun set made by Vaper/Titan Tools a few years ago. They worked okay on a couple of tractors I restored but I was not completely satisfied with the results. I wrote it off to my lack of experience/knowledge.
I plan to have a professional spray the exterior panels on my 52 but I am painting everything else. No matter how I have tried to adjust the Vaper gun my finishes have such severe orange peel they look like someone hammered a hammered finish. Finally decided it may not be me and I bought a Devilbiss Finishline 3 gun- referred to by many as a lower end acceptable gun.
The difference is absolutely amazing. I am very pleased with the finish I got. I am posting this in case any other novices wonder if it is worth spending some extra money for a better quality gun. In my experience it really is worthwhile, even if you are not much of a painter. In fact it may be even more important if you are not a great painter.
