I agree, closer to the fuel tank is better. Also make sure the fuel pump is not close to any hot objects, to make the pump last longer.
The main reasons why newer cars have the electric fuel pumps inside the tank is to keep the pump cool and lubricated by the fuel in the fuel tank. Many cars use a secondary fuel pump in-line to help push the fuel.
