the HD alternator on my 58 has been working the ammeter fine for many years, not sure why you think it would be "overloaded" - the gauge simply registers the output of the alt to the battery, if you're sending so much current to the battery [or drawing from], to peg that ammeter I'd be more concerned about a battery explosion wink
