You should have got it running and took it to a carwash and ignored the sign that says no engine washing. It doesn't get it all that clean, but most of the grime and mud will come off and make the rest easier.
I agree that pulling the engine is the easiest and best way to get the thing clean. While it's out you can do some detail work in the engine compartment.
