Grab the pinion flange. There should be no up-down play. Pull the cover & try to move the ring gear & carrier side to side. There should be no play there either. Get some gear marking compound & check the gear contact paterns. Compare it to the shop manual chart. If it is not right move the carrier in or out by loosening the adjuster on one side & tightening on the other. Keep experimenting till you get the best pattern than snug the adjusters up & put the locks back in. The amount of backlash is not important unless it is way out of spec.
