It sounds like it may be a belt twisting up. I've had tires do that many times but it's normally toward the end of their lifespan when the tread is almost to the wearbars. If it is a twisted belt it'll get worse the longer you drive it. I had one once that got so bad it twisted itself right off of the rim as I went around a corner in town.
