I had the same problem. Bought the seal and the "sneaky pete". It took me about a year to get the guts to try it. After taking it a part I found a new style rubber lip seal "yahoo". I ran and bought one installed it and have been happy ever since. It seems that the early '54 235 used the rope seal and the later ones a rubber seal. Hopefully you have a later one.
