Your post did not say how they broke was it the pin that keep the handle on? If so, one thing you may try is slowly re-drilling the pinway grove for a bigger rod/pin. The original was a small hollow tube when was split down the length. Up grade to a harden material.

If the handle it self broke thet must be something restricting and causing serious drag, it take a bit of pressure to move those things.
