Not all states were the same. Apparently South Dakota used the serial number on the data plate if that's been your experience. I've been advised by Gene Schneider (sp?) over at the VCCA and others that most states, including my own, used the engine number through '55. I've certainly not registered pre '56 vehicles in every state so if they're all wrong so am I. At any rate those asking where their "VIN" is should get all of the info that applies. I was just trying to make sure the initial poster was aware that not all "VINs" were on a metal tag.
