There is a difference in opinion as to whether the serial number on the data plate Bruce refers to or the engine number is the "VIN". For my money it's the number on the title which through '55 was normally the engine number. Your engine number should be on a raised boss by the distributor. I don't recall when the change was made from the front to the back so your engine number would be just in front of or just behind the distributor on the block (on my 38 it's just behind the dizzy). If I'm full of beans someone will point that out.
