the earlier 4.3 does seem to have a rougher idle. the later vortec with balance shaft has a smoother idle but you're right about the massive harness to sort through to figure out what parts you need not to mention the later ecu's control transmission shift points so yuo would throw a code unless you used the electronic overdrive trans.
