I'm a rank amateur as a mechanic, but I don't think there is any way you can tell which way the disc was put in unless you actually take it apart. I just put a new clutch in when I rebuilt my motor. Fortunately the disc was marked with a sitck on tag to show which way the disc should go. It was hard to see, but the plate was also marked around the edge. It was a good thing the stick on tag was on there, because I didn't know it mattered, and I couldn't see that much difference from one side to the other, and I probably would have put it in wrong.
