I think the vinyl may not cover up as much as you think. I think that if there is a layer difference that can be felt where the old lettering was, you may be able to see it through the vinyl. I think I would drive it by a sign shop and have them put a piece of scrap vinyl down to see if it did or didn't show through. Then do what makes sense after that. By the way, nice looking ride.
