I really considered doing that but didn't for two reasons. It would have made it difficult to remove the top of the Rochester carb for cleaning and servicing. Installation would have been awkward because I would have had to spin the filter body on to the pipe nipple and there is nowhere to put a wrench to tighten it.
Also, I don't think that thread is 1/8" pipe or 1/4" pipe thread. A 1/4" nipple threaded in, but fit loosely. As I recall, my thread gauge said that the original fitting was 16 tpi.
