caroline,

You're a relative newcomer and were not around the 2 or 3 years ago when I built my 292 (and bothered everybody here darn near to death! smile ) I have my engine in a 1966 shortbed stepside pickup and run the extra long 36 inch tube headers. The exhaust is joined together about a foot past the 2 1/2 inch header collectors by a makeshift welded "Y" pipe. The single pipe is 3 inches in diameter and goes into a single-in/dual-out FlowMaster 40 series muffler.

I like the results and look forward to doing a similar setup on my next engine. Only thing I'll do differently next time is use a smaller diameter muffler inlet (maybe 2 1/2 inches instead of 3 inches). The sound is different for a straight 6 (Woogeroo has heard it). Not a typical 6 cylinder sound at all. Most people think it's a stock small block. The exhaust note gets slightly raspy when you punch it really hard and hold it. On normal acceleration the exhaust stays deep and low. Just like I want it.
