I disagree. If there is little or NO CIRCULATION at the temperature guage, that means the guage is of no use in indicating the engine temperature. According to the illustration in the shop manual, there is a definite movement of water through the system of a Chevrolet inline 216, 235 or 261. The flow is there. That's what the water pump is for. I personally think the flow is probably best at the water pump, but as Bill states, it is awkward looking. It is just a matter of how you want the set up to look and how well you want it to work, but as long as it is circulating, and it will with a functioning water pump, either choice should work.

If it was me and I had it set up to work the way you do, I would leave it. After you fire the truck up, you can see how it works and if you want to try the other method, for the sake of looking better, then that's a choice you may want to make at that time.
