A couple of squirts of brake kleen and the numbers on the block magically changed. Or maybe my old eyes suddenly got better. Naaaaaahhhhh.
Anyway, the (revised) block # is 3837004 which is a 55-57 235 truck engine block. Now I that I've had a chance to do a little reading, I'm not sure whether I'm happy about this or bummed. I wanted an engine original to the truck to restore and I guess this one isn't, am I correct?
