One thing I noticed the first time I fired up my 1959 Viking with the tranny cover off was that the trans rattled really badly in neutral. Turned out that after I changed the clutch, I undid the plug on the tranny, and maybe a pint of oil drained out....
Well! The truck had been sitting for something like 5 years, and who knows how it was treated before that. So, I refilled the tranny and behold! Oil does wonderful things! The rattle went away.
Now I see why it was so low on oil after all these years. The tranny has two power take offs, and they both leak. One quite badly, leaving quite a spot. Good thing I'm not parking the thing on a paved driveway.
One of the interior PTO knobs is red, and the other one is black, and says "Spicer" on the knob. Both the PTO's look the same. I'm familiar with Dana/Spicer from my work on Jeeps. Has anyone ever replaced seals on PTO's? There seems to be quite a leak around one of the spinning PTO shafts.
Neither of the PTO's are connected to anything at present. So one solution is to simply take them off and install cover plates. But I plan on using at least one of them to power a PTO winch one day, and maybe use the other to run a water pump, so I would like for them to work and not leak, eventually. I've searched the internet for seal kits or rebuild kits for PTO's, but had no luck. Does anyone know if kits or available, or does one just need to find the seals individually?
Thanks.
