Most S10's with the 4 cylinder have 3.42-3.70 gears. The 2.8's with a 5 speed have 3.42 gears. The later 4.3 models have a slightly larger ring gear, with the most common ratio being 2.73-3.08.The standard ratio depends on if the truck is 2 or 4 wheel or a stick. The 4 wheel drive axle is supposed to be a few inches wider than the 2wd.The rear brakes are small, shouldn't be a problem on a truck that carries no load. The S10 rear will take some abuse but aggressive driving toast a stock rear. One problem occurs on the rear axles, which ride directly on the bearings, like other Chevys. The axles are sometimes worn out , as S10's are entry level stuff that often abused and not serviced properly.
