Where the heck did you have the PCV hose hooked up to? It should be plumbed into the air cleaner, NOT full manifold vacuum. You will need a vent (like a vented oil fill cap) and a baffle under the PCV valve to keep oil from entering the system. The PCV system is for keeping pressure out of the crank case but you don't want a lot of vacuum either. Seals and gaskets can get damaged from both,

Any vehicles I have worked on with a PCV valve have it plumbed into manifold vacuum, with a breather or hose from the engine to the breather to allow filtered air in.
