I think there's some confusion here. By ID plate, do you mean the one that has the GVW and engine horsepower on it? If so, that is only a data plate, and has nothing to do with vehicle identification. That plate is the smaller, usually stainless, plate that is mounted up higher on the door opening. That one is the one with the body/chassis number on it, and is the important one to the DMV. Now as far as a date/id plate goes, since you're not concerned with 100% originality, there are companies that make id plates for hot rods that you can enter your own info on, such as engine, trans, rearend, owner, builder, etc. I forget who makes the ones I saw, but I did see some very nice ones at the last Super Sunday Swap Meet I went to in Indy last Janurary. They could even be had with the specific brand logo on them. I'm planning to go to the one at the end of this month, I can check on the brand for you if you would like me to, and maybe get a website for them.
