In our update of December 31 05
http://www.mar-k.com/wood_finish_testing_ii.html we said the POR 15 was applied in 3 coats 3 hours apart. Quote:
1. POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint with Behr black glossy enamel. Three coats of POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint applied 3 hours apart and the first coat of Behr applied 3 hours after the last coat of POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint . Two more coats of Behr applied the next day.
o This appears to be a durable black paint system.
o Possible slight reduction of gloss since the initial application in July.
o You can see the grain pattern of the wood but the boards are fully sealed and there are no flaws in the coating.
That is also from the information sheet recommending 2-5 hours between coats. Scuff sanding is not desirable unless the POR15 is allowed to dry longer between coats. The surface is not dry enough to scuff sand in only 3 hours. Using the recommended dry time between coats without scuff sanding will provide the best adhesion between coats. Users should read the POR 15 information sheet for much more useful information about using POR 15. POR 15 dries to a very hard smooth surface when fully cured and if the 2-5 hour window is exceeded it must be sanded well or the next coat, whether top coat or POR15, will not stick to it.
Also note that after 3 1/2 years continuous outdoor exposure, the black painted boards in our test still show no failures. This is a very durable paint system. I would not be able to comment on the durability of a system or method of application different than the one we tested. The report is only a test and the results posted are the test results. Due to conditions beyond our control and knowledge, others may experience different results.
