The 1954 Chevrolet drive train, if original and from a 1/2 ton truck, will have an enclosed drive shaft and a transmission with an enclosed-drive-shaft fitting at the rear.
The GMC 228 engine is a longer engine than the 235 - maybe someone will discuss what modifications, if any, would be needed for motor mounts and clutch housing.
