I'm currently rebuilding my '49 1/2-ton steering box. I removed the Pitman arm, cover plate, and sector shaft, and removed the worm gear adjusting nut and end race. Inside is a huge gooey mess of grease, dirt, and gear oil. It's hard for me to see what's inside. The shop manual says the next step is to pull the worm gear and nut out of the casing. Is this right? My worm gear and nut seem like they are too large to fit through the opening at the end of the shaft. I'm sure a good power wash will help me understand, but I thought I would post the question anyway. Or maybe the shaft pulls out the other end (steering wheel end of the box)?
