common problem Ralph, the hinge pivot pins are worn, need new hinges, that's why the PO took the springs off, no adjustment possible
the springs are very strong, just hafta tough it out to get'em on ...
tech tip about it, but a pair of vice grips and a strong arm has always worked for me
