well, on the cheap end why not just try the T5 swap. The T5 was a 5 speed found in a variety of vehicles. You probably would want 1 out of a chevy s10 pickup. You should be able to leave your rear end alone for now. The t5 is not a heavy duty transmission, and may not live long in a heavier vehicle, but it should match up pretty well with a 235's powerband.
With any transmission swap you will likely have to have a new driveshaft made.
