There is a rule of thumb for both the door handle and the window crank handle. Put the door handle in a position where it's easy to operate AND is out of the way of your leg/knee. It get uncomfortable in a hurry when your leg is resting on the handle. The window crank handle needs to be positioned where vibration and gravity won't let the window roll down. Place it where gravity pulls the handle in the closed direction when the window is both up and down. I can't tell you how many times I fixed a "the window won't stay up" complaint by simply repositioning the handle.
