The spring rebuilding shop that used to be in our town, always re-arched them and added leaves or whatever, then bolted them together. They sprayed them after assembly, with some black paint that was either chassis black, or the type paint radiator shops use. This went on for 30 years, but I don't know if that was correct or not.
