I browsed through a couple issues of Auto Trader recently. The evidence suggests you can buy an older Caddy or Olsmobile with a monster big block, ps, pb, ac, and real cushy seats, dirt cheap if you don't mind a high miler that's all beat up. If a guy went that route, he would have all the parts to build a real cool hot rod truck. Definitely not a "cookie cutter" ride, and not for the "bolt on billet" crowd. We discussed Caddy 500's above, but there are a bunch of others; 390, 425, 429, 472, et, and my recollection of the 455 olds is that they came in two basic configurations; FAST, and FASTER!
So anyway, all this applies to me because professionally I am at a cross roads in my career. I've decided to return to school this fall, so for the next couple years I will be doing everything on the cheap. You can freshen up a 250 for about $300 including a mild cam. I have a Weber carb on it, and I am going to split the manifold soon. So, stock with weber carb, mild cam, and dual exhaust is the way I am going to run it for a couple years. After that I will be making almost twice as much money as I do now, so I will be able to choose based on what I want rather than what I can afford!
