If the trailer weights 2000 you only have 4000 in load capacity. That '72 K2500 might weigh close to that. I think the trailer is probably on the small side, but adequate.
At 16 feet it would not haul something like the 6400 you used to have and at 6000 GVWR would not have the load capacity for it either.
