The only place I've ever seen that setup is on industrial engines and some 18-wheelers.
Jerry Amsoil makes a full flow/bypass remote filter setup like you are describing. They do have one that is sized for smaller engines. I am considering doing this on a full flow 261 since I want to install a spin on remote mount filter anyway. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/bf.aspx
