I worked with a guy who was involved in designing the Saginaw 4-speed, and he said it was intended for use in the Vega 4-cylinder, and similar cars. They did a double heat-treat and some other modifications on a few to run behind big V-8's in their personal hot rods, but he said the average Saginaw wouldn't live very long behind a high-torque V-8. It might be OK with the 235.
